2018-2019 After School Program Grant Challenge
Holmes MS PTA, along with the Virginia PTA, strongly supports after school programming. The PTA’s priority is to promote a robust after school program that provides academic enrichment and a safe environment for our students.The program should provide diverse offerings of interest to and open to participation by all Holmes students.
Research shows that participation in after-school programs leads to:
- Increased classroom participation, homework completion and academic performance
- Improved student behavior
- Better student/adult relationships, peer relations, and emotional adjustment
- Improved school attendance
- More positive attitudes towards school
- Reduced high-risk behavior
- Increased participation in healthy recreational activities
- Increased school, family, and community partnerships
An FCPS employee must serve as the official sponsor of programs; oftentimes parents play a significant supporting role. To encourage faculty and staff to sponsor after school programs, the PTA has established the Holmes MS PTA After School Program Challenge Grant.
Purpose: To provide funds to implement or expand high-quality after school programs that offer students academic/educational enrichment and recreational activities that are designed to reinforce and complement the academic program at Holmes Middle School.
Background: The Holmes Middle School PTA through the “Hawks Fly High” direct donation campaign and a variety of fundraisers significantly increased its annual budget. As stated in our Goals/Objectives, a primary purpose of this fundraising is to provide grants to implement new and sustain popular after school programming. The award dates are intended to foster new programming each quarter and to ensure a robust program is in place at the start of each school year.

Award Dates: (no later than)
October 15 (for second quarter programming)
January 15 (for third quarter programming)
March 15 (for fourth quarter programming)
June 13 (for 1st quarter and/or year-long programming in the next school year)
